Bespoke handsets for all
Headquartered in the UK, with operations in the Netherlands, Hong Kong and China, Sendo, a new mobile phone company, launched recently with the intention of offering high-performance, competitively-priced, reliable products and services to the cellular industry.
In a market traditionally dominated by the major handset manufacturers, Sendo will operate on the premise that cellular network operators need to differentiate amongst themselves in products and services, and will offer operators a complete custom program - from exclusively-branded handsets, matched fulfilment programs and bespoke soft-ware with dedicated services, through to valueadds such as prepaid, WAP and SIM Toolkit applications.
The company has centred its business model around a flexible manufacturing and distribution strategy, and claims to be able to ship products to customers within 48 to 72 hours of the initial order -dependent on stock - although orders for customised handsets will take between three weeks to two months (according to levels of customisation required).
According to Leo Burghouwt, vp Asia Pacific & operations, Sendo, this 'ship to order' process offers many advantages over the 'assembly to forecast' method of traditional manufacturing, "We basically decoupled the long lead time of manufacturing away from the customisation of the product," he said.
Transceivers are manufactured at Hong Kong-based telecoms conglomerate, CCT's Guangdong factory in China (on a sub-contracting basis) and are then shipped to Sendo s configuration and distribution centre in The Netherlands -where covers, keyboards and configuration software is added. Speculation that Sendo may consider central/eastern Europe as a manufacturing base was not substantiated by the company. However, Sendo has been discussing handset deals with operators in the region.
The company is now manufacturing in China and ready to configure in the Netherlands, and expects to sell several million mobile handsets this year, with forecast revenues of several hundreds of millions of dollars. Despite recent profit warnings issued by Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola, as a result oflower-than-expected handset sales, Sendo remains confident of its forecasts, citing the fact that the industry expects to sell around 560million units this year.
Having announced a commercial agreement with UK-based virtual mobile network operator, Virgin Mobile (details of which remain undisclosed) the first market-ready Sendo handsets were shipped before Christmas to the 'T for Telecoms' chain in the Netherlands, and are available at US$90 with subscription, and at US$360 retail.
